Hope somebody can help with this one. We have just been on a trip through Germany and Austria to Hungary. the lifting roof failed just outside Vienna and we went to a VW agent. they diagnosed after 5 hours of investigation a failed hydraulic pump. They quoted 1300 euros to do the job but the pump would not be available for 3 days. Cost of part 897 euros. We have left until returning home but are having trouble finding a VW agent happy to do the work. has anybody had this done, is it a common fault? Our van is 5 years old and is used as a camper for about a month a year, so not heavy use. Would appreciate any advice on reliable garages for the California camping part of the van. We are Nottinghamshire based but prepared to travel. Thanks Barrie

Hi Barrie & Maggie
Welcome to the forum, this is a known fault but before answering, what exactly failed ?. did the roof fail to raise completely or did it raise more one side than the other or did it start to drop once it was in its raised position.
The pumps (just over the windscreen) are hydraulic and can topped up with fluid, perhaps this is all that is required, i would have thought that any VW California agent would have been pleased to help, SMG from Cowfold certainly would but its a bit of a way to travel.

Thanks Cliff, we did have a full strip down investigation in Vienna and it is the pump. My local van centre are saying that the pump alone is going to be around £800 pounds and and the labour getting on for another £400. Even at that price they are not sure that they want to attempt it. I Will give your suggestion a ring and get a price from them. It is getting to a level were this job is almost worth going abroad to get it done. Vienna only quoted 280 euros for labour. Have you had work done at Cowford. I think I will also give customer service a ring and see what their angle on this fault is.

Hydrolic pump for lifting roof Empty Lifting roof pump and Holland

Post by BarrieandMaggie Wed Jun 13, 2012 7:59 pm

Thanks Cliff,
have found an agent who is a specialist in Californias and has give me a quote and estimates it to be 4 hours work and has done the work before. Am likely to go with them as they are only an hour away. I also see you are planning a trip to Holland in July. If you are anywhere near Amersford they have the best agent for all things for the California and Karmann campers. They only deal with the two vans and so have an extensive stock of all the accessories as well as a lot of vans. We have been twice on our way to Denmark, it is a lot of fun if thats what you like.
Thanks for the advice, Barrie
