Booking the Eurotunnel

Hi, does anyone have any advice as to which vehicle option I should use when booking Eurotunnel. The Campervan option is more expensive than the Van option and as the California is the same as a T5 why should we pay more. Has anyone had any bad experiences if they said they were a van? We got away with it last year, but don't know if we were just lucky. Many thanks.

i booked yesterday and queried it over the phone. i was told it is classed as a camper/motorhome as that is what it says on the registration document. apparently, it comes down to the fact that we can cook in it!! ridiculous isn't it!
i argued that that was irrelevant with regard to the space it will take up in the train. the nice young man was very apologetic and queried it with a manager. no joy. so had to pay the more expensive price.

it's nothing to do with the size of your vehicle. if you are a campervan, you are travelling with gas onboard and they need to know to carry out safety checks.

it might sound stupid but there are a lot of amateur conversions out there and certainly in this case it makes sense for everyone that someone is checking that their gas is off.

We queried this in November and spoke to a supervisor, apparently you must choose campervan as you have gas onboard and you go in with all the caravans and motorhomes.

i have travelled through the tunnel several times in an MPV with camping equipment, including a gas bottle that was checked and not been charged for the privilage. so it irks me to have to pay more.

bviously, the tunnel must be different to a ferry - I can't speak for the tunnel as I have never been on it.
Have travelled on the ferry many many times. Very occasionally asked if we have gas on board and just asked to make sure it was switched off. Never has been checked or have never seen checks made on anyone else.
As for the campervan / motorhome thing: Booking as a motorhome? - well the camper is not a motorhome as it doesn't have a formal WC or shower - the only other option is a panel van - well it's not a panel van - so why not book as a car under 5m long and under 2m tall? Bugs me to pay more!
Many consider it a large car - at Mont-St Michel car park were parked with all the motorhomes - chap came round asking for payment fully expecting motorhome price, turns out he just kept repeating "no car, car!" so ended up paying price of a standard car instead of motorhome prices -great! It's happened to us twice now...
